An Optimist Considers Mortality

In No Time Like the Future, Michael J. Fox shares personal stories and observations about illness and health; aging; the strength of family and friends; and how our perceptions about time affect the way we approach mortality. Thoughtful and moving, but with Fox’s trademark sense of humor, his book provides a vehicle for reflection about our lives, our loves, and our losses. While each person with Parkinson's has a unique set of symptoms and strengths, given Jed Rardin's PD diagnosis a few years ago, this very accessible book is a good way for us as a congregation to experience one person's story. Jed will host a Zoom conversation about the book and about his own journey with Parkinson's on Wednesday, September 1 at 4:30p.m. Register today!

With 10 days remaining, we are on the cusp of exceeding our fundraising goal. Let's see how far we can exceed it! The registration deadline has been extended till June 1st. Join the 184 Challenge!
The Get Movin’184 Challenge is around the corner! This is our primary fundraiser this year, and now is the time for you to get involved! Help us celebrate 184 years of ministry!
Here is how to get started:
If you plan to be a participant: Choose an activity that you are willing to take part in at some point during the week of May 28 to June 4, 2021. The activity can take place on one day within that week or can be spread out as a participant wishes throughout any part of the week. The goal of the activity must include the numbers one (1), eight (8) and four (4) in any order or combination. For example, you might set your goal as riding your bike for 18.4 miles on any given day, or walk 1.84 miles each day of the week. Whatever it is, make sure it is an activity you can do safely and responsibly. Invite your friends and family to register, too, and enlarge the circle of fun, friendship and support.
Next, complete the South Church 184 Challenge registration form by May 14th (may be done online or by printing out the form and mailing it to the church office) See below for links.
Registration fees are $25 for adults, $10 for youth ages 15-18, and $15 for seniors;. Families pay a maximum fee of $50. Youth under the age of 14 are free, but must have written permission of the parent or guardian along with an assurance of supervision. Registration forms may be filled out and fees may be submitted and paid online by clicking here or via check mailed to the church office (27 Pleasant Street, Concord, NH, 03301) A printable challenge packet can be found by clicking here.
If you want to sponsor a participant: A list of Sponsorship levels can be found here. Sponsorship payments can be made online here , or, if you prefer, simply mail a check to the church office with “184 Challenge” and the name of the person you are sponsoring in the memo line.

Racial Justice Events
South Church is Reading: Don’t miss the opportunity for a shared reading and reflection experience on best-selling author Jodi Picoult’s novel Small Great Things. She creates sympathetic characters and a compelling storyline,“ forcing engaged readers to meditate on their own beliefs and actions along with these characters.” The book is available at Gibson’s with 10% discount (just mention South Church reading group). Discussion opportunities will be offered in mid-May.
Covid Memorial Prayer Beads
This bead tapestry is a way to memorialize and honor those who have died from Covid-19 in the Granite State. Each prayer bead has a bell or charm at the bottom to represent the individuals who passed and to remind us that: we hear you, your life matters, and we pray for you. In addition to the bells or charms, twelve beads were placed on the prayer beads as a reminder of the year we have all endured.
Over fifty volunteers assisted in making the prayer beads within our congregation as well as individuals from Maine and Colorado. The volunteers were asked to pray for those individuals who have died while making the prayer beads. While we don’t have the names of these individuals, we wanted the beads to symbolize them. They were asked to imagine their struggle; what their families endured; and the medical professionals that help them in their final days.
One year after the pandemic started, we have a total of 1,187 prayer beads hanging on our tapestry; one for each individual that has died of Covid and ten strings bordering the tapestry representing each county of the state. These prayer beads reflect the individual and ourselves as we lift up our prayers and remember these individuals. The pandemic has changed our lives, it has changed our way of thinking, it has changed our day-to-day living, but it hasn’t changed who we are and those we love.
